Rooney double strike sinks Liverpool .

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney got both goals as they beat Liverpool at Old Trafford to move top of the Barclays Premier League.

After a subdued first half the match came to life two minutes after half-time when Rooney volleyed in from a Ryan Giggs corner and then Antonio Valencia set him up to add another three minutes later.

Liverpool made it a nervous finish for United when Luis Suarez poked home for the Reds, but the home team held on for the victory that edges them ahead of Manchester City, who play on Sunday.
